My mom and I are home after a bustling weekend in NYC. Millions of New Yorkers and tourists, thousands of yellow taxis, hundreds of street meat carts and at least ONE naked angel in Times Square.

Landing as the first day of NY Fashion Week (Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week) got underway, celebrities, models, editors and designers bombarded the city for a serious SS14 fashion frenzy. Which of these categories do my mom and I fall under? Clearly, we are celebrities.

I was excited to be in the city during such an important time; to relive the energy that I normally only live twice a year through live-stream video, re-grams on Instagram and designer & blogger updates online. But, THEN it happened. I found myself entering the heavily secured doors inside Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week beside bloggers who have over 200K Instagram followers alone.

HOW? WHY? I was given the opportunity to experience a day in the life with only 80 other lucky fashionable fans. American Express teamed up with iconic handbag turned wearable apparel designer Rebecca Minkoff to produce a new way into the very VIP world of fashion week. A private party hosted by Kelly Osbourne with an up close look at the models fresh off the SS14 runway, a live interview with Rebecca and a solid performance by Janelle Monae to close out the show.

SHUTUP. Seriously. This happened. Someone pinch me.

POSE. Going in. IMG_5240Inside the doors of MBFW.IMG_5236A fashionable crowd waiting to enter the Rebecca Minkoff runway show. IMG_5242Myself, enjoying a BECK’s beer… still in shock. IMG_5321The host of our party and live-streamed by Kelly Osbourne. She is adorable.IMG_5281The models seconds after the SS14 show. Excuse my blurry photos. My excitement overtook me. I jumped in front of the runway. IMG_5287RM SS14 line had a blatant Latin American feel to it – embroidery and loads of colour and playful shades. We also saw bomber jackets, parachute dresses, sexy tomboy appeals and serious mesh patterns detailed in leather. IMG_5289IMG_5290Those boots? I die.IMG_5292IMG_5300IMG_5308The very humble and down to earth designer joined us for a up close and personal interview sesh with Kelly. We learned her love for those great tassel heels and picking one favourite look from her collection would be like picking a favourite child. IMG_5382Janelle Monae ROCKED it out. Her performance for the party was phenomenal. I felt slightly guilty for previously making fun of her on my blog. Forgive me Janelle?IMG_5334

You must be wondering about my little white lie to Rebecca. I am still kicking myself. Rebecca had made it clear she wasn’t taking photos with fans. I knew my only way to her would be to jump on the runway to catch her on her way out of the party, so of course that’s what I did. I stopped her and let her know that I was part of the crew and we would need a photo together. SHE agreed. As I handed my camera to someone to catch the memorable shot of her and I…

…the camera died. True story. KARMA!

I just started following Cara Delevingne on Instagram and have become slightly obsessed with her. Big name cosmetic companies have actually lost out on ‘eyebrow tweezer’ sales since she became a fashion model phenomenon over the last year. She could potentially become an all time favoured model of mine and that brings us to this shoot.

When I randomly stumbled across this editorial of Cara smooching a miniature god (we all know him, Karl Lagerfeld) – I was excited to see her as a crusader and muse for Uncle Karl. Of course, I am a little bias.

They teamed up to shoot Karl’s collection for ‘Melissa’, which was then featured in Melissa’s in-house publication. This came to life not long after Vivienne Westwood, Jean Paul Gaultier and Gareth Pugh recently finished collaborating with the Brazilian label. KL designed 4 classic shoe styles and one even dawned a sparkly ice cream cone on the heel. Why? Why not – he’s Karl Lagerfeld.

Now, where can I find that knit Karl doll?

Sadly, as it is late in the season for an ice cream cone heel, you can bet that strappy pair of Melissa Melissima flats will never stray far from being considered current. EENY, MEENY, MINEY, MO.

The nights feel later earlier and those not-so-vague hints that summer is nearing an end are becoming apparent. My summer sandals and getting pushed further to the back of my closet (I’m organized, I know), cashmere cardigans are breaking lose for the crisp evenings on the deck and that fashionable season of fur Fall is at our fingertips.

Be warned. We are in store for a fur frenzy. A FURENZY. Coats, collars, hats, scarves and handbags. Striped, dyed, embossed and manipulated. Fur was everywhere on the runways last February proving it’s back by designers with a -don’t care, PETA who?- vengeance.

Before anyone gets upset, the use of fur in fashion is inevitably recurring. Its timeless and the uncertainty of there ever being a middle ground with fur and fashion will age unresolved, as it stands the debate between it being natural and renewable as opposed to being inhumane and cruel to animals. Happily for everyone, no matter what your beliefs are anyone can enjoy the look of fur, perhaps just not the ridiculously warm and regal “feel” of genuine fur with faux or recycled.

I chose some stand out pieces from NY I am severely crushing on. Some may be slightly pretentious on a day-to-day basis but stunningly luscious to look at. Unfortunately, my bank account can’t take an 4K hit at the moment or ever, as beautiful as they are.

Here are some reasonable options so we can all get in on this ferocious trend, in a budget and moral friendly way. All images via Nordstrom.

BB DAKOTA x. $128

ALICE & OLIVIA x. $435

SMYTHE x. $766

TED BAKER x. $166

ASHLEY B x. $1102

TED BAKER x. $435

I appreciate and lust for genuine fur, there are many misconceptions in the billion dollar fur industry. However, I do also appreciate people’s feelings and opinions on the super sensitive issue.

Are you a fur feline?

Celebrity grills.  Why is this happening? Gold and diamond encrusted grillZ are only sort of cool if your Flavor Flav and if it happens to be 1983.

I hope that none of you are eating right now.

Madonna x.

20130828-220115.jpg I am not sure what is worse, the vein or the grill. At 55, Madonna is still pretending she isn’t aging. Please retire “M-dawg”.

Katy Perry x.

RAWR. Yes! VERY scary indeed Katy.

Kelis x.

Kelis’ grillZ match her skin. And her hair. I don’t get it.

Chris Brown x.

20130828-224026.jpgNot sure why I included Chris, I don’t think anyone expects anything better from this Rihanna woman beater. DURRR!

Rihanna x. speak of the devil

20130828-224821.jpgA gun? Of all things. Classy. Wash yo’ mouth out!

Brooke Hogan x.

So it turns out money can buy you love; AND mouth and gum disease. HOPE tha BLING is worth it guys.

I am officially convinced to make my own grillZ and snap a photo. Stay tuned on my instagram for the reveal: frankiilynn

It’s not everyday you get to hang with fashion celebs – and I don’t just mean you Vickie.

Lisa Tant, VP Fashion Editor for Holt Renfrew visited Edmonton on a 3 city tour to present the Fall ’13 fashion trends that we are all secretly dying to break out. I, not so secretively… guys I am full fledged ready for summer to take a hike so that I can break out suede boots and faux fur.

Lisa chose a pink and red print Lida Biday fitted dress and black pumps to guide us through next seasons on-trend fashions. Five key fashionable trends each with a runway, street style and model look. Lisa refined that street style truly is the new way of fashion today – with thousands of style bloggers erupting in the industry this couldn’t be more true.

Fall is by far my favorite season. Is it any wonder why? What are you looking forward to rocking most this upcoming season?

x Courtney

Hi friends. What better way to transition into Fall (admit it, the end of summer is near!) then have a close up look into the upcoming FW13 trends, presented by a Canadian editorial icon of mine, Lisa Tant. I am predicting seeing looks conducive of beautiful greens, statement jackets and maybe even a slouchy beanie or two.

Lisa Tant is currently the VP Fashion Editor of Holt Renfrew, after leaving her legacy behind as the EIC at Flare Magazine.  Anyone who knows me, knows that it is my DREAM to one day rock the title Editor in Chief – ideally founding my own magazine – but I’ll take the EIC title happily for an established brand any day. Stay tuned for photos and Lisa’s personalized looks for Fall.

Who’s coming?

Canada always seems to be a little slower to catch up to the rest of the globe when it comes to our physical access to fashionable worldwide brands. With luxury department stores like Nordstrom planned to open in select canadian locations in 2014 (Toronto, your mom didn’t teach you how to share) and now thanks to the rich bastards at Hudson’s Bay Company, their buyout of Saks Fifth Avenue deems news of yet another glorious department store to grace our Canadian presence in the future. Hip hip hooray.

While I am impatiently waiting for these retailers to open their doors, luckily in the meantime we have Holt Renfrew already at our fingertips – literally – and their increase in brand inventory lately is exciting enough in itself, unfortunately not always the case with our YEG location, but who’s complaining. Last week, I was ecstatic with the news that BOY London is hitting select HR locations. It looks like a cowtown road trip is in my future.

BOY London is a brand that refers to themselves as “often imitated, never duplicated”. It’s true. At one point, being the LABEL of an ERAahem, the 80s – those who could get BOY snatched it, those who couldn’t, imitated it. Huge demand crumbled the brand but after an endless legacy, BOY was relaunched in 2007. That’s when we fell in love. The totem pole / BOY logo is simple but always boldly apparent. Its also a rare thing to find a marketable brand that makes a lot of unisex pieces.

I happen to dislike online shopping and have to force myself time after time in order to land a great item, but having to guess at the fit of a garment has never been my shot of whiskey cup of tea.

Oddly enough, My BOY leggings from ASOS fit like a glove… how badass are these. Go away hot, humid days- I want to rock these out.

A little more UK in Canada never hurt anybody. Welcome to Canada, incredibly soft and uber cool leggings.
