Maison Martin Margiela – H&M

Fashion editors, bloggers and fashion junkies were spewing at the mouth yesterday about the global launch that was held yesterday in fashion hub NYC to debut the 100 piece collaboration collection between Maison Martin Margiela and H&M. Kanye, SJP and Selma Blair all bumped shoulders. Where the hell was I?

Throughout all of the buzz, what do you actually know about Maison Martin Margiela? Probably not a hell of a lot. The most controversial and unique characteristic about this Belgian fashion designer is that throughout his career, he has refused to be photographed, always remains backstage and refuses to participate in traditional interviews. He designs primarily around recycling used items and re-interpretation. Perhaps you purchased MMM clothing, well it too is unsigned – traditionally bearing only a white rectangular label printed with a series of numbers and a circle. Mysterious much? What’s this guys deal? If you need to get a hold of MMM… send him a fax. Truth!

When the news broke of the collaboration I figured that the fashion house would not veer far from their normality. I expected deconstructed and architectural shapes. MMM intrigues me but this capsule collection sure doesn’t.

A few distinct pieces I would consider closet worthy:

You’re probably like, ‘where are all of the bottoms?’ They were a big bore. What do you think about the MMM collection for H&M? The steep prices are unfortunate.

  1. Very interesting pieces indeed. The blue sweater dress reminds me of Edward Scissorhands. I do like a few of the more simplistic pieces like the navy jacket and black skirt.

    • The entire collection is simplistic but the shapes are not subdued and have a lot of character. I know he designed for a broader market for H&M than usual, but I found a lot of it very boring and uninspiring. Love the scissor hand sweater and the belt jacket is pretty amazing too. 🙂 xx

  2. Went to see the prices and some of them are a little bit high to my budget. But I know a lot of people will find them affordable. “low cost” is a trend right now.

    • I don’t know if low cost is considered a trend or simply the way that the shitty economy has molded most household budgets. The prices did surprise me and I find them pretty steep seeing that he is paired up with H&M. Some cool pieces, most of it was a big yawn. Xx

      • Designers know that middle class will pay anything for their designs. Even if they max their credit cards.

  3. Loving it! Love those boots, always crazy for a lucite heel. The bracelet is very similar to an Low Luv creation… Love it, very awesome stuff!
