A la Mode 101 – Staying Age Appropriate

“I’m a woman in my early fifties and I love fashion. Are there age appropriate fashions or trends I should be aware of, or does common sense just come into play when creating a look for myself?”

Simply remember that fashion doesn’t discriminate! No matter your age, you can be stylish and fashion forward. Of course, against every woman’s wishes – we do age. As you mature you have to tweak your wardrobe – areas can start to sag lose definition. Fifties doesn’t mean frumpies… think comfort and elegance.

Lets start off simple. I hate to be the bearer of bad news here but for your own dignity’s sake, it is important that you are aware there are certain things you should not wear at this point. Donate and back away!

x. Leg warmers
x. Micro-miniskirts
x. Ankle bracelets
x. Short shorts
x. Crocs. Okay, no one wear these
x. Tie-dye
x. Cargo pants
x. Acid-washed, ripped or super-low-riding jeans

Don’t be afraid of colour x. You probably find yourself hesitant for bright pops of colour in your wardrobe. That’s unfortunate. Splashes of bold and bright colour like oranges, reds, purples, greens and blues add life to any neutral look. Perhaps a look you veer to often? Your accessories would love a shot of colour, they have feelings too you know.

A great pair of denim jeans x. No longer are women in their fifties limited with elasticized “mom jeans”. Now designers and brands cater to a much wider audience for fit and style. Be sure to keep the waistband rise at a medium and opting for a darker wash will always keep you looking lean. Lose the studs, rips and embroidery. Trust me, by investing in a well-fitted pair of jeans, you’re butt will thank you and me.

Investing in a classic coat x. There is no coat more classic than a trench coat. Trenches or any coat with a wrap belt looks cool and polished. Just how a woman in her fifties should look. Try to steer clear of bright shades and keep it neutral. How about throwing on an edgy, radiant scarf to finish your ensemble. Or use the scarf as your opportunity for that punch of colour.

Be considerate with prints x. Prints are always a great way to jive up your look. Florals and stripes are probably most common and easily look best. Keep the prints small and if its too much for you, tone it down by throwing on a knit cardigan or light jacket overtop.

Here are some images for your inspiration. Happy styling!

If you find yourself wondering, “Am I too old to wear this”? Well, chances are you probably are. Dress for your body type, by this time most women know their body type and what fits best. If all else fails, accessories NEVER discriminate.

  2. Love this! I dress my fabulous 61 y/o mother. I swear she looks better than me. I also buy all her makeup and teach her how to do it. I love to do it! I feel this advice lacks in fashion today, but there are so many options! Shout out to all the hot momMas!

    • Haha, love the shout out!! I think we agreed before that shopping with our mamas is our favourite. I hope to be as fabulous as mine when I am her age too. Rock on hot mommies. Xx
